Saeta Yield (Masdar) secures support from the EU Innovation Fund 2024 for the H2 Critón project

Saeta Yield, a Masdar Company, has been awarded support under the European Commission’s Innovation Fund 2024 Auction (IF24) for the H2 Critón (H2CRI) project, with a fixed premium of €0.44/kg of RFNBO produced and a maximum grant amount of €13,136,192.68.

As Masdar’s renewable energy platform in Western Europe, Saeta stands at the forefront of the energy transition in the Iberian Peninsula, contributing to the European Union’s decarbonisation objectives.

The H2CRI project aims to install 30 MW of electrolysis capacity to produce 30 kilotonnes of RFNBO hydrogen over a ten-year period. The facility will act as a regional cornerstone in the deployment of clean hydrogen, helping to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors. The hydrogen produced will directly contribute to emissions reductions in both heavy transport and industrial sectors. H2CRI will be a key enabler of Spain’s hydrogen roadmap and the broader objectives of the European Green Deal, supporting the replacement of fossil fuels and the transition towards a circular, low-carbon economy.

The H2CRI project includes the construction of a green hydrogen production plant through electrolysis, powered by dedicated renewable assets. Electricity for the plant will be supplied through a fully integrated, on-site renewable configuration combining photovoltaic (PV) and wind installations located on-site or nearby.

This strategy ensures that all hydrogen production meets the requirements to be considered RFNBO, guaranteeing full traceability, transparency, and compliance with EU renewable energy criteria. The use of the project’s own generation assets maximises energy security and reduces exposure to market volatility, while ensuring continuous alignment with the European Union’s sustainability and additionality principles.

Employment will span the project’s development, construction, component supply, and logistics operations phases. By developing local infrastructure and integrating renewable supply chains, H2CRI contributes to regional economic development and strengthens the EU’s strategic autonomy in the energy and clean technology sectors.
